GENERAL POLICIES

 

1.- The Saint David School is a non-profit bilingual education institution that offers services to the community of Santiago de los Caballeros.

2.- New members of the Pre-School are accepted from one year onwards. The School will evaluate the maturity level of each child individually, and will place him/her in an appropriate level according to the levels established by the School and in accordance with the law. The School reserves the right to make any decision oriented towards the best interests of the student, if he/she shows difficulty in adapting.

3.-New members of the Basic and Intermediate Level must present the Academic and Behavioral Record of the previous School. Saint David School will evaluate the student's academic level. Parents will be charged the current fee to take the entrance exam. Parents will be informed of the results.

REGULATIONS

 

1. Absences: Students returning to school after missing class must present a written statement from their parents justifying their absence. Unexcused absences will affect their Personal Adjustment grades in the Responsibility section. The following absences will be considered unexcused: helping out at home, doing chores, accompanying parents on business or pleasure trips, entertaining guests, or missing the bus to school. Exceptions will be made only in cases of emergency.

 

2. Tardiness: Students who arrive late to school (after the flag has been raised) will be noted on the student record. Tardiness will affect Personal Adjustment grades in the Responsibility area.

 

NOTE: After three unexcused absences or tardies in one week, parents will be notified. If a series of absences or tardies occur over several consecutive weeks, parents will be notified. If attendance does not improve, a meeting between parents, students and the school will be requested.

DISEASE

 

1.- The Professor in Charge must be notified if a student must take medication during class hours.

2.- When a student feels ill and it is necessary to send him/her home, the parents or the responsible person indicated by them will be notified to pick up the student.

3.- In the event of an emergency, or at the discretion of the Management, due to the nature of the illness or accident, the student will be kept at the School until the parents or responsible person appear.

4.- A student who is absent from school due to a contagious disease will be readmitted to classes only upon presentation of a Medical Certificate indicating that the student has fully recovered. Siblings should also not attend classes.

5.- Students who are ill will be excused from Physical Education. Even if the student cannot participate due to illness, he or she must come to class in uniform to observe.

DISCIPLINE AND CONDUCT

 

Criteria for evaluating student behavior

 

  • Observe good manners and do not use inappropriate language.

  • Show respect to classmates, teachers and other school staff.

  • Listen carefully and without interruption to the Teachers' explanations.

  • Do not talk to your partner while explaining.

  • Raise your hand to ask for permission.

  • Ask permission before getting up.

  • Do not manipulate objects while giving an explanation.

  • Not studying a subject other than the one being taught at the time.

  • Speak with a modulated tone of voice.

  • Ask permission to borrow supplies from your classmates.

3. No student may leave the School or green area during class hours without explicit permission from the Management.

4.The withdrawal of a student will not be considered valid, unless there is prior notification, from the Parents, to the Management.

5. All students must wear the school uniform designated by the College and must always maintain a good appearance.

6. All students must wear the sports uniform on the day designated to carry out this discipline.

7. All students must bring or purchase a nutritious snack.

8. The School cannot take responsibility for the loss of money and other valuable items from students. It is forbidden to bring electronic games and equipment, such as Game Boys, Ipods, etc. Personal phones are allowed, but must be handed to the Teaching Secretary during class hours. Should a student wish to speak to his/her parents, this must be done via the office.

9. All school books must be covered with transparent plastic.

  • Do not use nicknames or make unpleasant comments to your classmates.

  • Do not run in the hallway to avoid accidents.

  • Take care of the school property, cooperating with cleanliness and order.

  • Do not use rough games with your peers.

  • Do not chew gum in any area of the school.

  • Do not eat sweets during class time.

  • Participate respectfully in the raising of the flag.

  • Fulfill your academic duties, completing the tasks assigned in the course and at home, with the best performance possible and handing in the work on time.

WAYS USED TO MODIFY INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIORS

 

Each teacher will be responsible for the positive motivation and behavioral evaluation of his/her students, and must take certain actions in the face of inappropriate behavior (see criteria for evaluating behavior). The following are specified various measures that can be taken: verbally claiming an absence, assigning extra homework, isolating the student from the rest of his/her group; leaving him/her without recess, lowering grades. No teacher has the right to physically punish a student. In case of a serious offense, or repetition of certain behaviors, or failure to fulfill academic duties, the teacher will write a report to the Guidance Department. After three reports, the Director will be notified, in order to then seek help from the parents.

 

WARNING, DETENTION, SUSPENSION AND EXPULSION

 

A student may be reprimanded, retained, suspended or expelled for the following reasons: fighting, fraud, theft or vandalism, excessive absences from classes without justified reason, failure to fulfill academic duties, excessive tardiness, and for lack of respect for the rights of classmates, teachers and other members of the school staff.

Note: As a result of three reports (warnings), the Guidance Department may make the decision to retain a student from the Secondary Level, after 3:00 pm, for a maximum of one hour.

STUDENT PERFORMANCE GRADES

 

Each student is subject to an evaluation throughout the school year that follows the suggestions established by the State Secretariat of Education (Ordinance No. 2'92, Articles 7 to 36). The School will communicate, via the Report Card, the following:

 

1). The progress of each student in the program areas, taking into account individual work, class and home assignments, team work, and test and exam results.

 

2). The student's Personal-Social Adjustment will be evaluated taking into account the following aspects:

Initial: Personal and environmental hygiene habits; coexistence; courtesy; order; responsibility; effort; creativity; aggression control; personal safety; cooperation.

Primary and Secondary : Respect, Compliance with Course and Institution Regulations, Study Habits, Good Interpersonal Relationships.

 

3). Attendance at classes. Absences are classified as: Unjustified absences, Justified absences (excused), and Tardiness.

The promotion of students , in accordance with Ordinance No. 2'92, will take into account the three aspects identified and communicated via the Report Card.
